A Boy And His Atom: The World's Smallest Movie

You're about to see the movie that holds the Guinness World Records™ record for the World's Smallest Stop-Motion Film (see how it was made at http://youtu.be/xA4QWwaweWA). The ability to move single atoms — the smallest particles of any element in the universe — is crucial to IBM's research in the field of atomic memory. But even nanophysicists need to have a little fun. In that spirit, IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules (two atoms stacked on top of each other), all in pursuit of making a movie so small it can be seen only when you magnify it 100 million times. A movie made with atoms. Learn more about atomic memory, data storage and big data at http://www.ibm.com/madewithatoms

GAMING NEWZ: Deadpool's Newest Random Refurbished

A Few Words From The Writer

Living so close to the production of “The Walking Dead,” it has been easy to see the rising popularity of zombies. The market was becoming inundated with lots of the same ideas. When Liz asked me if I could come up with a script that kind of looked at the whole Zombie Apocalypse thing from a different point of view, I was thrilled. Her idea was to look at it through the lens of reality shows similar to ones we have today. That was all I needed to get cracking.
“Undead Hunter” was a chance for me to give a shout out to one of my favorite reality shows of all time - “The Crocodile Hunter” - and I am grateful to Liz for giving me the opportunity to play Billy, the hunter, in the episode. Once again, seeing the hard work and professionalism of the cast and crew up close was inspiring. I have worked on other productions and shorts that did not run on time, did not have a set schedule and did not respect the time of the people participating. Zombie Socks has been top notch since day one and I know that even when I can’t be on set when filming of my scripts are taking place, they are in excellent hands.

History Is Made As Television Production Hits The Net....

Ever since ABC canceled beloved daytime dramas All My Children and One Life To Live fans began their relentless quest to get them back into production.  Monday April 29, 2013 their dream finally came to fruition as Prospect Park, who purchased both serials from ABC, finally unveiled the much anticipated online reboots exclusively on Hulu making an historic moment in web content history.

The road has been one a long one, fraught with enough drama behind-the-scenes as on screen.  Ex-ABC Executives Jeff Kwatinez and Rich Frank initially failed to accomplish their mission when plans to hit the web arena fell through with the announcement made the day before Thanksgiving, November 2011.  All involved were in complete shock, but Kwatinez and Frank did not give up.  The Executive Producers put together a business plan, then spent last summer shopping it around until they found funding.

Meanwhile fans continued to fight for their soaps, launching campaigns including thanking sponsors who advertise during the remaining network daytime serials General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, The Young & the Restless and The Bold & the Beautiful.  Sponsors were amazed at the positive campaign, surprised to learn that soap fans were responsible for it.  Unbeknownst to fans at the time, they played an integral role in creating the data for Kwatinez and Frank to clearly demonstrate to investors soaps were still in great demand.  In another twist and mitigating factor, General Hospital that was literally on the brink of cancellation, proved that if you give fans what they want they will come!  Once the initial reboot efforts were stalled, the duo tasked at the helm Executive Producer Frank Valentini and Head Writer Ron Carlivati took over the reigns at General Hospital and worked their magic!  Thankfully, Vikki Dummer who was appointed ABC Daytime President after Brian Frons, has allowed Valentini and Carlivati to do what they can to ensure the iconic serial continues. The duo had specific plans for GH and thanks to their efforts, ratings are up 45% from last year with a 2.8 share in the all important 18-34 women demographic.  It continues to climb as fan favorites including Genie Francis, Finola Hughes, Jack Wagner, Ian Buchanan, Jackie Zeman and others were once again put in the forefront.   All of this played a part in the return of OLTL and AMC online.

In addition, General Hospitall just celebrated their 50th Anniversary, The Young & the Restless their 40th Anniversary, The Bold & the Beautiful their 25th Anniversary and Nov. 8 Days of Our Lives turns 48, truly making 2013 the year of soaps! With all the attention on daytime again, it is clear that soaps are in great demand, are here to stay and now all eyes are watching the transition from network television to the Net.  In the 1940's many doubted this new technology called television and never dreamed it would be the next wave in entertainment.  Over 70 years later, the Internet is what television was to radio with many in the entertainment industry looking to bring back the creative that has been lost to greed.  In its' infancy, this new way of storytelling is slowly being recognized for the goldmine it is- freedom with no restrictions and the sky's the limit.  Question is for networks, production companies and those already in the web arena, is it profitable?  Is it quantifiable? Can the creative remain if networks enter the arena?

Prospect Park is embarking on answering these questions.  They have made a deal with Hulu to exclusively stream new 30 minute episodes of All My Children and One Life To Live 4 days a week, with a recap on Fridays.  Those wanting to have the option of watching it on their televisions must sign up for Hulu Plus for $7.99/month which allows access via all mobile devices including smart phones, iPads, Notebooks, XBox, etc...  For those with iTunes accounts, episodes are available for .99 cents each.  Many Canadian fans were happy to learn they can stream the new episodes via FX Canada, another exclusive deal with Prospect Park.    Analytics will play an important role in the coming months to quantify the demand, as well as profits. If this works, will the remaining network daytime serials also make the jump to the web?  Will network mentality change the canvass and freedom on the Net?  It all remains to be seen.

Unfortunately there are other problems that have cropped up that could affect the overall outcome of what the future holds for the newly launched reboots.  In January it was reported that Prospect Park wanted the OLTL characters John McBain, Todd and Star Manning back in Llanview, though they'd been deeply integrated into the General Hospital canvass with each character involved in major storylines, as well as romances.  Prospect Park obtained an injunction effectively forbidding actors Michael Easton and Kris Alderson to be at General Hospital's studio after February 8, though the actors themselves are on contract with ABC.  Confirmation that neither Easton nor Alderson were returning to Llanview broke in March, finally answering the question as to whether they'd be involved in the relaunch.

April 19, 2013, just 10 days away from the relaunch, it was reported that Prospect Park is suing ABC for Breach of Contract with regards to One Life To Live characters leased to General Hospital during the year Kwatinez and Frank worked to get financial backers.  The complaint alleges among other things, that ABC has attempted to thwart the success of the online reboots refusing to advertise, though actors from both OLTL and AMC are slated to appear on ABC's The View.  Additionally they maintain proof of ABC's plot against the reboots is clearly demonstrated by the fact two of the leased OLTL characters were unceremoniously killed off and they utilized another character not leased to them in a storyline plot.  Another allegation is that ABC is refusing to release URL's onelifetolive.com and allmychildren.com, which automatically go to the ABC website. The complaint further alleges Prospect Park had every intention of utilizing the popular actors in the reboots.  However, interestingly Roger Howarth was the only one of the 3 asked to return and in January 2012 when the trio were signed on to General Hospital, they did not have financial backers for the reboots, nor did they know they would secure it until late summer 2012.  The tug of war continued when Prospect Park refused to allow the character Todd Manning to be on General Hospital at the same time he is on One Life To Live, so ABC finally made the decision not to fight to keep the characters, but will bring the coveted actors back to General Hospital as new ones in an effort to move forward with some resolution.

On April 23, 2013 ABC responded to Prospect Park's lawsuit via Soap Opera Digest, who posted this statement from the network:

"ABC remains very supportive of the online launch of both 'One Life To Live' and 'All My
Children'.  With respect to Prospect Park's lawsuit, we believe the claims are baseless and we
will defend them vigorously in court and not the press."

ABC has a new Daytime President who is a soap fan herself, interested in keeping the genre alive. Since Vikki Dummer has taken over, they've done everything within their power to keep General Hospital on their network.  By utilizing Valentini and Carlivati's knowledge of the show, their talents, showcasing it in multiple media outlets including receiving honors at the Paley Center, and celebrating its' 50th Anniversary giving the cast, crew and fans the royal treatment, in my opinion the claims that they are serial killers alleged within the lawsuit are unsubstantiated.

What will happen next is anybody's guess, but I encourage fans to let the lawyers duke it out in court and continue to support our soaps.

For now fans are rejoicing, happy to see their favorite extended families back on their screens again.  This soap fan remains positive and hopeful that the Internet will continue to be a place were freedom and creative control reigns.

*RHeart Radio will take a look at the new episodes of All My Children & One Life To Live Wednesday, May 3rd at 10pm (ET), so join the conversation! What do you think of the relaunch?

Taking fan's calls:  (646) 200-0145  RHeart Radio's History Is Made...

Congratulations to the casts and crews of All My Children and One Life To Live!
Welcome home!  Fans are behind you 2000% and always will be!

An Interview with Web Series Creator Otessa Ghadar

At the 20/20 Productions web series screening at Filmfest DC this year, Otessa Ghadar, creator of the web series "Orange Juice in Bishop's Garden," sat down with Aaron Mullins and Tyler Perry of Rubacam Media for an interview for The Georgetown Dish.

Check out their conversation on Orange Juice, creating a web series, and living in Washington, DC. You’ll learn some new things, too. Like Otessa was named “Most Likely to Create  a Web Series” in the 7th grade, and the idea of the web series was once thought of as a kinky, off-beaten thing to do!

Read the interview below, or check it out on The Georgetown Dish site here.

Aaron: So where did you grow up?
Otessa: I actually grew up in D.C., Adams Morgan.
A: Adams Morgan? I used to live in Adams Morgan.
O: Oh! No kidding? You know the 7-Eleven?
A: Yea.
O: I grew up a block from there.
A: I lived on Columbia Road.
O: Crazy! My old stomping grounds. A great place to grow up.
A: So, is it true you were named “Most Likely to Create a Web Series” in 7th grade?
O: (Laughs) You know, I perceived a show in 7th grade, but that was not it! I think I was “Most Creative Dresser.”
A: Really?
O: Yes. Although I don’t know if that was supposed to mean “Best Dressed” or just “Weirdest Dresser.” I never got clarification on that!
A: I could really go either way.
O: Exactly  Could have been a good thing or a bad thing. So anyways, there was no creating of a web series, but I was definitely in on it early.

A: Where were you when you first heard the words – web series?
O: I was in grad school. Actually, I remember this very well because it was one of those light bulb / epiphany moments. Marshall Herskovitz came to give a presentation at the school. Now, for me growing up, My So-Called Life (the teen TV drama created and produced by Herskovitz) was it. When that show was I, I told my mother, if anyone calls, take a message!
A: Huh.
O: I mean, it was like a business meeting for me. I was serious about this show. So when he came to my grad school, he spoke about “new media” and his experiences with that – which is really what did it for me. I was compelled.
A: I see.
O: I don’t know about you, but I know so many people from film school who go into debt creating one short film that they hope is going to go to Sundance and at the end of the day, what? It’s a business card. One of the most expensive business cards that could ruin the next fifteen years of your life if it doesn’t pay off. It’s terrifying.
A: For sure.
O: So with the web series format, I found a place where I could be creative, explore the things that I’m interested in, and do so in a way that’s not going to break the bank.
A: Interesting. Where did you come up with the concept of Orange Juice in Bishop’s Garden?
O: It started as my thesis. I was writing a script about the 79’ Revolution in Iran, combined as a story about my parents. I don’t know if you’ve ever written a story about your parents?
A: I have not.
O: It’s a nightmare! Trying to tell the story of your parents young and in love. I mean, just don’t!
A: I can imagine.
O: So, needless to say, I was running into a lot of trouble, getting into the issue of how this was a very serious political time, and my parents left Iran barley with their lives…I mean, it’s a story that’s very interesting and I want to revisit it, but I ran into a wall with it.  Besides, I didn’t have the resources to tell that kind of story.
A: Sure.
O: So I started just writing these vignettes, things that I remember from growing up. And at the end of the day, I noticed – these all kind of come together. I have a continual story that could be told in a web series. That’s how it started.
A: So you write everything?
O: Yes, I write it, direct it and produce it. Which, I think is the case for a lot of us.
A: That great. It’s so true. You have to take the big ideas and ask, “Is this scalable?”
O: Exactly! Which is something you don’t really learn in film school. My experience is that you always run into limitations and restraints – it’s how you deal with them that is artistic and creative and even more organic I think.
A: What film’s have inspired you to become a filmmaker?
O: Three films in particular really shook me. Blow-up (Antonioni), Harold and Maude (Hal Ashby), and last, but certainly not least, Repo Man (Alex Cox).
A: You’re really leading the charge right now with Web Series in D.C.
O: That’s very nice of you to say. I remember when it was a very disreputable thing to do.
A: Oh yea?
O: People thought it was just weird and kinky and wrong.
A: Kinky? Really?
O: I’m not even joking! Some of my professors in film school thought it was a little to “off beat.”
A: Something wrong with you.
O: Yea! Well, I was in New York city for seven years, and it was great, but I have no desire to move back. Glad to be home in D.C. I mean, speaking to the film community that we have here, just so incredibly talented and wildly diverse in the types of stories that they’re making – it’s something I really feel strongly about.

A: Well, tell us about the DC Web Series Festival you’ve started.
O: I would love to build this out and do the festival year after year! For starters, it’s just about putting D.C. on the map and trying to connect the dots among the filmmakers who are here. From there, I believe we can make it something larger and more substantial.
A: Cool.
O: There are a few web series festivals out there, but I don’t see any reason why D.C. shouldn’t lead the way. The way I see it, pound for pound, if people know how many shows and web series creators there where in D.C., they would be shocked, and see that it really is on par with New York.
A: It was great to see filmmakers utilizing the D.C. metro area. I mean, a western shot in Virginia. Makes sense.
O: The diversity is impressive.
A: So is the future of Orange Juice in Bishops Garden? And do you drink orange juice?
O: (Laughs) I hate orange juice with a fiery passion! I think it tastes disgusting with everything else you could have for breakfast! So yea, I’m anti.
A: Now we know!
O: Right! But in terms of series, we have ten or so episodes in the can which I’m excited to bring out and I want to do a major push to get it on wider platforms for the final run.
A: The show is over?
O: Well, I’d love to keep on doing it forever, but the reason I’m drawing the series to a close is that I have another show that I’m chomping at the bit to get started.
A: Great!
O: As you know, supporting yourself as an artist and following those dreams doesn’t leave much time. I was hoping to continue to Orange Juice while starting this other show, but it divides focus and I want to do the best job at everything.
A: Makes sense. We’ll all be on the look out for that. You’re off the hook now.
O: We’re done?
A:  All done.
O: Thank you. This has been great.”

The End Is Near!

I am not quite sure where April has gone. It has been a whirlwind of activity! We started out the month at RavenCon, a Sci-Fi convention in Richmond, VA, where the cast and crew got their geek on. While we were down there, cast members who weren't in Richmond joined Otessa and crew at the First Annual DC Web Series Festival. The following weekend found me, and a few other cast members back in DC as part of the Best of DC Web Series Festival at FilmFest DC. In the meantime, Clint and the crew filmed all weekend, and worked to get us back on schedule after a winter of delays and aggravation. We have been working long days, filming all weekend, and it is getting crazy as we near the completion of Season 1. We have more effects shots and more fight sequences that need to be done, choreography and fight training, and general mayhem! We only have 4 weekends of shooting left until we are wrapped. And while part of me is breathing a sigh of relief that we are nearly done, part of me is sad to see it go, if only for a while. But the work is far from finished. Clint is going to be up to his eyeballs working on special effects and getting the rest of the season edited. As of last Thursday, we have provided new content each week for 22 weeks!

Now, back to work, getting ready for Sci-Fi Valley Con on May 17-19, and Balticon on Memorial Day weekend!
