Introducing "Moments In Web Series History"

First Blog / Dorkiness Prevails
So, I finally got a webcam and got it working (ugh, harder than I thought...). Hope you like it :)
Today we introduce a new "story stream" called "Moments In Web Series History" and we want you to participate. Why today? Well, as any "lonelygirl15" participant knows it was 6 years ago today, on June 16, 2006, that Bree posted the video above. The rest is history.

"Moments In Web Series History" will be about those special moments where the World of Web series was changed by significant historical Web series events that affected the community at large, or the entire direction of Web series. We want you to participate.

If you are already an "author" on Web Series Today simply create your post about a significant historical event and add the tag/label "Moments In Web Series History" which will add the post to the story stream. You can always find a link to the story stream in the "Categories" column of the menu at the top of the blog.

Note that this stream is not something that should be used to promote your own show unless it was associated with a major historical Web series event. For example things like the launch of your show or your first 1000 subscribers may be historical in the context of your own show, but here we are looking at the larger picture of monumental events that left a major impact or impression on the Web series community.

If you want to become an author in order to participate just follow the instructions given on the link on the right side of the blog.  If you just want to comment, you can simply add historical facts and/or links in the comments on any of the posts with the label: Moments In Web Series History

To get the ball rolling we have added the label to two previously existing story streams: This Day in LG15 History and This Day in Web Series History. The new label, "Moments In Web Series History," will help broaden the historical Web series information cover by the story stream.

Hopefully by collaborating on this project we can build something special.

This is the cast members from Lonelygirl15 making an appearance at VidCon 2011. I apologize for two things: 1. Sorry if the camera shakes at all, Im a non-existent YouTube blogger, so my arms aren't bulky. 2. I also apologize for the distance from the stage. I couldn't get any closer.

We Break Hearts: The anatomy of an Absolute Disaster

We have now seen the third act of "We Break Hearts", a web series that some expected to be a break out hit because of its star studded cast: Jessica Lee Rose, Maxwell Glick and Craig Frank. But the results are in and the view count is far from an outstanding hit. Now some web series would love to have even 1000 views but remember that "We Break Hearts" had front page exposure (presumably purchased advertising) on DailyMotion on the launch day of each episode. The series itself was far from a disaster with an interesting plot and some solid performances. So what went so far wrong?

We have heard some say that the web series is dead. We do not subscribe to that theory. Independent producers appear to be just as enthusiastic as ever and some have been produced with quite good production values. Clearly some shows such as Video Game Reunion still resonate with their audience. Some blame the "discovery process" but clearly "We Break Hearts had a lot of front page exposure on a major portal site and that seems to have done little in terms of views. So the question remains, what went wrong?

To be fair, we enjoyed the series. It was great to see Jessica and Maxwell "together" again in a web series and the show itself has a interesting plot. However that does not change the reality the view numbers are really bad for a show of this caliber, particularly one brought to us by Brett Register of "The Crew" fame. So for the sake of everyone involved this is perhaps a good point to step back and ask what web series are doing right and where they are simply failing in the marketplace.....and why?

What do you think? Leave a comment below and let us know.

HAPPY NEW YEAR: Looking back, and looking forward.

The video above was first posted on January 1, 2007. That is four years ago. It is a video that sent shock waves through the Lonelygirl15 community.

Times have changed but when we look back towards the beginning of the Lonelygirl15 series we perhaps see the beginning of the "web series" phenomena. It is true that there was online content back in the 90s but I think anyone involved with Lonelygirl15 would recognize that it was transformative.

From the beginning Lonelygirl15 broke all the rules. Who would think of producing a series at anything less than "DVD quality"? Certainly not anyone from the TV industry. Everything about Lonelygirl15 was different. The production, the distribution, the engagement. We did not so much view it as a series but rather participated in it. This is when the "web series" came into being.

Thank you Mesh, Miles and Greg for breaking the rules. Thank you Jessica for being our "gem." Thank you Yousef for being a gentleman. Thank you Amanda for adding the drive. Thank you Cassie for adding the darkness. Thank you Glenn for adding the sparkle. Thank you Zoey and all the admins of LGPedia who added order to the chaos. Thank you to all the cast and crew who contributed over the years. Thank you to the community who participated.

Someone asked me yesterday if LG15 was dead. Not sure about that, but what I can tell you is that "Lonelygirl15" is alive and well. "Lonelygirl15" is not just a web series, it is a way of life. Today the community may not be centered on one web site but the bonds that were formed still live on in Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Twitter, Wikipedia, Second Life, etc. etc. Community members have permeated every aspect of online entertainment and each and every one knows the debt they owe to "Lonelygirl15".

So as we move on to look forward to 2011, lets take a moment and salute the past. "Lonelygirl15" will inspire many web series in the years to come and each and every one of them should appreciate the well spring that gave them life.

WE WILL NOT BE STOPPED.
