Japan remakes internet drama "Prom Queen"

"Prom Queen," an internet drama series that became popular through MySpace last year, is getting a Japanese adaptation. Like the original, "Tokyo Prom Queen" will be presented in 80 daily installments, each lasting only 90 seconds.

Talking about Japan, there is a Lonelygirl15 community on Mixi, the Japanese social network:

Hi Modelmotion, I got your message on mixi.

It's funny to see my mixi profile image here. Think you could maybe explain that?

By the way, if you need any help with Mixi, let me know.

Juuleeya is the person who invited me to join Mixi because Mixi is an invite only site. Juuleeya, whose icon is shown above, then sent me a note on Mixi about the LG15 community and that is how I discovered it. ~mm

I am sure a few of us could use some help navigating Mixi.

  8. I can easily invite if Modelmotion has trouble- just send me your email address (I'm on LG15.com as well)

Modelmotion, you appear to be at someone's blog. Do you know who it is?

  10. I am stumbling around blind on Mixi so if juuleeya can send you an invite that would definately be a lot easier. It is hand to tell which button says send and which say delete....lol......

And no, I had no idea where I was, I just did a search on Mixi for Tokyo Prom Queen and that showed up.

I need to work on a bot algorithm for Japanese

  11. juuleeya - that would be great. my email is [email protected]

  12. ok, juuleeya graciously sent me an invite, and this is what i learned. as of april 7, 2008 mixi seems to be forcing everyone to include a cellphone email adress for a japanese phone in order to register.

here is a great guide for trying to register that doesn't deal with this issue:
    http://gaijinwomen.com/complete-the-new-member-registration-process/

this blog talks about the problem:
    http://worshipandthearts.blogspot.com/2008/02/introduction-to-mixi-japanese-social.html

"As of April 7, Mixi requires a valid (Japanese) cellphone e-mail address in order to sign up for its membership. The only exception is when your "regular" e-mail address belongs to one of the ISP's recognized as "safe" by Mixi. As usual, Mixi will not publish the list of those "safe" providers."

it would seem to me the only way around this would be having to find a japanese person willing to "lend you" their cellphone address. if anyone figures out any other way, let me know. its an intriguing puzzle to get on the site.

  13. addition: oh, i also guess if there is a "safe" regular email address one could acquire, that would work as well. like, for example, a japanese gmail? the second blogpost says:

"BUT, if you try to register using an email address that you pay for, like "jcom.home.ne.jp" etc. one that is a contract provider, THEN Mixi doesn't require a mobile phone address!"

its not clear to me it HAS to be a pay email, but i don't know anything about free japanese email providers.

sheesh. this is worse than navigating lg15.com during the cassie days.

  14. another addition:

this post and thread is full of commentary, but no one has figured out a way around it.

    http://www.tofugu.com/2008/04/22/mixijp-hates-foreigners-now-requiring-a-mobile-email-address-to-join/

if you already have a mixi account, they are saying it seems you are safe for now.

  15. Eeep, I didn't know about that. X(

Do you think that a Yahoo Japan email address work?

I'll let you all know if I think of anything.

    ReplyDelete
  16. nah, i don't think that will work based on what i read. yahoo, gmail, etc. aren't on their "approved" ISP list.

thank you for the invite nonetheless, it was fascinating to learn a bit about the site, i even updated the english wikipedia page on mixi because it was terrible.

  17. This was a pretty amazing discussion if you think about it. I love that we can help each other out (or try to at least). The interwebz RAWKS.
