Looks Like Our Nominated Show is Ignored Again By TubeFilter

::::: UPDATE:::::

Tom Konkle said...
It is a gift to be chosen to be in this or any screening and in the Streamys.

The manner in which it is given is worth more than the gift.

We were contacted by Tubefilter now and they have decided they will include our nominated series in the screening and we are grateful to have a place at the table of relevancy while looking at last year’s work is still on the radar. It is all fleeting. It goes a long way to making us feel like at some point we had the nomination elevate our profile to be considered among the other ones already or repeatedly chosen.

So, a sincere thank you for the change of heart and giving us a moment this time too and we appreciate the decision to include a segment of the ridiculous Safety Geeks: SVI series we worked so hard on to be part of something this time in the presentation of Best of the Web, nominees and winners of the Streamys for a good cause… The Egyptian Theater organization.

Further damage control, they are host a Best of The Web screening of nominees and winners from the Streamys at the Egyptian theater and guess what we were invited to pay BUT we had sent clips to be included in the best of the web montage at the awards we were nominated for (silly us) we weren't in anything or even seen as a show in either awards so we asked the logical question, " as one of the "best" are we going to have clips from our shows in this event?"

  1. The problem with having the IAWTV award show owned and operated by Streamy LLC/Tubefilter is that you have conflicts of interest all over the place. This has been discussed exhaustively. If the membership of the IAWTV does not take swift and decisive action to correct this it is just going to continue and get worse over time. As stated else where, the IAWTV should take 100 percent control and ownership of their own award show.

Tubefilter is a private for profit company and as such it is going to make decisions based on its own needs and priorities. That is how the free market works. If the IAWTV membership chooses to continue with the current relationship then they are directly responsible for everything that happens because of it. It is really time for the IAWTV to decide who they represent.

In terms of Tubefilters own events, well it is up to their management to make those decisions, and in turn its up to the community to decide if those events should be supported or not.

  2. Wow. Ungrateful much? SO many series didn't even get a NOMINATION and now you DEMAND your show get more attention? And when you things don't go your way, you try to get a group of fans all riled up to come to your defense? You really think that is going to send out the right message and draw people to your cause who could actually help you? You gain more with sugar than vinegar sir.

It's a shame because Brittany is such a lovely person and the one good thing you've done is gain her more exposure. I hope being affiliated with you doesn't bring her down.

  3. I may be totally wrong about this, but generally events like this are booked months in advance. I doubt this was "damage control" but more of an event they had booked Pre-Streamys without having forseen the outcome.

  4. "So last night I get an email from Tube guys asking why I in public called out this bullsh*t treatment of our show and why did we post it calling it? "

So now people are not supposed to talk openly about issues?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Discussing issues in a mature manner is different than dragging things out that could be discussed in private because you're taking advantage of the fact that the Tubefilter guys are in a tough spot right now. Way to kick them when they're down.

And it's easy when this is a one-sided discussion from Tom. We have no idea what Tubefilter actually said in their e-mail.

  6. Tom seems to be asking a very simple question. Are his clips included or not. Seems like a reasonable question to ask before he and his cast decide if they want to attend the event or not.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Agreed with Jenni, you don't just call up the Egyptian Theater and get it for a Friday night in 2 weeks.

Anyway, they haven't announced anyone yet for screening, and I'm guessing that's because they're securing shows in oder.

I didn't count, but last I checked there were A LOT of shows that were simply nominated, and the event is I'm guessing 3 hours with Q/A? No way they can fit them all.

My guess is that they would secure the high-profile shows with multiple Streamy wins first, The Guild, Easy to Assemble, The Bannen Way, AutoTune, Fear Clinic, Valemont, Between Two Ferns.... Then move on to the ones with single wins (Anyone But Me, Compulsions, Odd Jobs, Riese, Oz Girl, Diggnation, etc).

Doing a quick scan, there are 26 Streamy Winning shows from this year. Even if only 20 of them screen a single episode at 5 mins each (and I'm thinking some may screen 2) that's an hour of content right there.

Anyway, my concern is that if they don't announce who's screening soon, it'll be hard to fill the theater.

    ReplyDelete
  8. But why are they not just giving Tom an answer?

    A simple yes/no would be a start.

The issue here was never about when the theatre was booked for the event. The issue is whether or not Tom's clips are included, or not.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It would be nice to see what was actually said and an answer to be given though.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't think they have an answer for him yet...

Or would a "probably not" suffice?

I think they want the show creators to be there... so that could/would automatically knock out Autotune, Anyone But Me, Odd Jobs, and a few others right away. So (in using my hypothetical scenario) there would still be hope for a single nominated show like Safety Geeks yes?

Honestly, I really don't know. I'm just speculating, as we all are.

Btw, Compulsions wasn't part of the this year in Webseries video either (if that's still an issue), some of my team and supporters gave their "wtfs" but I just thought well whoever put this together just didn't include us... and I don't think it was one of the 5 TF hovering over an editor, it was an hired gun editor with a pile of DVDs going, I'll use this, and this, and this.. etc.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well the e-mail from the TF guys seems a bit strange but I guess we do not know exactly what it said. However Tom's question seems perfectly valid and his account of the TF response makes it seem extremely weird to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I guess I don't really see the point of the show. The Streamys were less than a month ago, weren't they supposed to celebrate the best of the web? Shouldn't the focus now be on the 'class of 2010?' Rather than having an event showcasing clips from a bunch of shows you've already seen, why not focus on the new stuff being created?

Yes, I know, "What new stuff?" Maybe that is why they are still focusing on last year.

    ReplyDelete
  13. One would assume the point of the show is to make money. Right? This type of event must be popular or they would not have them. Does it have sponsors?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well the idea of showing your material on the big screen (let alone a historic theater like the Egyptian) makes any filmmaker/actor giddy.

I know when I sent the prospect that we may be screened to my cast/crew, they all got really excited and are eagerly anticipating whether or not we will screen.

Personally, I'm just thrilled that my team is excited, so obviously I hope we screen.

Anyway, if the past webseries screenings at the Egyptian are any indication, I highly doubt that TF will pocket any more than a hundred dollars (if that).

    ReplyDelete
  15. I was just pointing out that TF is in business to make money. They do that by producing events that they think will be popular. If TF was not making money they would be out of business by now unless anon is right and they are VC backed, in which case it would depend on their "burn rate".

    ReplyDelete
  16. Bernie, I can understand why you would be thrilled about the prospect of seeing Compulsions on the big screen. I am sure it will look awesome, or as we like to say applesauce.

However, that does not get Tom the answer to the question he was asking. Again its a fair question and I fail to see why it is so hard for TF to answer.

We on the show are all curious before we invite people to read your blog … are you writing about our nominated series again?

I ask because there weren’t any clips or shots or stills on your blog last week of our nominated show and it’s weird to ask friends, cast and guests to read your blog if we have none of our nominated work featured again.

everyone wants to know will there be a SIGNIFICANT clip or hopefully clips of our nominated show, Safety Geeks (for which I spent time making multiple episodes for you to watch) will they be part of your blog? If it was worth nominating isnt it worth featuring on your blog? There’s only so much ignoring we can take.

    ReplyDelete
  18. That was a weird one. Everyone knows this is a collaborative blog so if anyone wants to post about Tom they are welcome to do so. Oh wait, we just did.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hehe yeah...

But either way, as much as Tubefilter is a business, I think it's quite a task to try to monetize something like covering and exposure of webseries. They do have 5 guys (and Powell) to pay for. I always feel they do a more solid job making money off their mixer/events than these screenings.

It's not like they're taking 100% of the box office from the Egyptian. I think they'll be lucky to take 50%.

Anyway, I do hope Safety Geeks screens, I really do. I imagine it'd translate really well to the big screen.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hopefully Safety Geeks will screen..... then we can get back to the real issue of how the IAWTV is going to run their award show...... that is, if they decide to take control of their own destiny as I hope they will. Nothing against TF, but there clearly needs to be some separation so that both entities can function independently and we can avoid all this drama and the sense that a private entity gets to play favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  21. In a best case scenario here if the IAWTV takes 100 percent control of their own award show there is still going to be a lot of work to do to create a system that is truly world wide, truly equitable and truly fair to all web series around the planet.

IF there is going to be a so called "academy" they need to act as such and the membership needs to demonstrate that they have the capacity to lead by example. It is not going to be easy. But it is the best way to move forward free from a system which has demonstrated itself to be filled with inner conflicts and susceptible to claims of bias.

If we can get 100 percent separation then TF will be free to run all its own corporate events free from such conflicts and that will probably serve all parties better in the long run.

    ReplyDelete
  22. An important clarification--Tubefilter will not make a single cent off of this event. Every single ticket sold goes to benefit American Cinematheque.

  25. who really cares if some webseries get played in some dumpy historic LA theater?

    epic fail.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Clearly it means something to those in LA, but as said many times recently it is time to "put the W back in www."

We need to move beyond this LA-centric period that has dominated the conversation for the past year and move "events" back to the web. A good example would be the IRC prom which was an event everyone around the planet could participate in.

They are called web series for a reason. The World Wide Web is the transformative technology that made them possible. In the context of this new world LA is just another city..... a dot on the planet.... no more, no less. Hopefully, going forward that is the spirit that the IAWTV will embrace.

As for TF events they seem to be grounded in physical locations such as LA and NYC. That is their business choice and they are entitled to make it. However such region specific events do not really represent the www community well, so while those in the regions affected will no doubt continue to enjoy TF events they do not reflect the full expanse of our global community.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @anon - "who really cares if some webseries get played in some dumpy historic LA theater?

    epic fail."

Wow... even though I do see your point (though I do not agree) of your first line...

It seems we're really diluting what gets classified as an "epic fail" these days... I mean really? "Epic?!" Come on now... let's hold the adjective to a higher standard.

Anyway, as for all the IAWTV, Streamy stuff... I think we're all waiting for the IAWTV meeting coming up in a week or so to take us all in a direction. No reason to start speculating in the threads until something comes out of that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This is not speculation. This is stating clearly and concisely how the issue looks from one perspective in the hope of influencing some of the IAWTV members in advance of the meeting on the 12th.

This is exactly the time we need open discussions and dialogue so that IAWTV members go to the meeting with well formulated concepts not only of their own opinion but of community opinions.

Thats not to say IAWTV members cannot mould to anything put on the table at the meeting, but each and every member should formulate their own opinion on the subject and not just be guided by those who claim to know better. We saw where that ended last time and we simply cannot afford for that to happen ever again.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Okay, the drama fire is about to go out on this discussion so let's stoke the flames.

How much will they be charging for popcorn and will it use coconut oil?

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how in a multi-billion dollar business like the entertainment industry a couple of bloggers became the most powerful force in web video.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Who are the "couple of bloggers"?

As for the discussion, I have yet to hear one coherent argument for why the IAWTV would not be better off in the long run with a fully independent award show that it owned and ran itself (or at least hired the producers).

One has to assume that the members of the IAWTV are capable of banding together to run an organization of course and that organization would need funding/sponsors. However given the membership already on board it is hard to see how that would present a major problem.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ the anon who suggested that a couple of bloggers are the most powerful force in web video:

They aren't. Go watch an episode of Lost on ABC.com or an ep of Survivor on CBS.com. The major players in web video are the networks who get the lion's share of the online advertising money. They upload their content to the web for big dollars.

Now as far as video exclusively produced for the web, that might be another story. Tubefilter and Newteevee made a power grab early on, and them being physically located in Hollywood certainly helps them. Even so, Web Series Today is catching on quickly. This blog gets more comments than either of the other two, as long as you don't count their twitter comment feeds ;)
