  1. So we have original content on www.bebo.com/, vids.myspace.com/, www.hulu.com/, beta.thewb.com/, www.strike.tv/ and http://medialab.ifc.com/

I have to wonder where EQAL fits into all this? Do they really expect to compete with 1 show?

Should come as no surprise that I think they wasted an opportunity to nurture and develop their UGC creators.

  2. Immortal1, thanks for the links!

As for EQAL, we haven't seen their business plan, so it's open to speculation... from past EQAL blog postings, I am under the impression they are spending on "technology infrastructure" right now, and the CBS deal seems to point to new shows to promote/supplement TV programming. Perhaps the revenue from such work will allow EQAL to continue to produce it's own lonelygirl15 spin-offs while building the online tools.

What seems missing to me is Bebo's big advantage - an already established and active social network. The new Bebo shows are getting instant audiences, and continuous front-page links at bebo.com

EQAL, by comparison, has an online presence that is spread across LG15.com, YouTube, a little on MySpace, a few fan blogs/forums. I'm not a fan of MySpace, but I think EQAL needs to leverage one or several of these social sites to build active audiences fast. I don't think one (even very successful) show is going to by itself spawn a social network with sufficient activity/participation to be self-sustaining. Is EQAL likely to create their own version of Bebo/MySpace/FaceBook/YouTube ?

Maybe the audiences will travel from TV viewship to EQAL hosted content, with links from CBS.com - that could be a big boost.

The biggest thing EQAL has going for them on the marketing side is a history of worldwide media coverage of the "lonelygirl15" brand - but it also limits the perception of those minimally familiar with the show.

Being located in California is also a benefit, if the goal is to work with the traditional TV networks or Hollywood.

I would like to see more online serials tied to big movie releases - seems like a natural way to turn advertising money into bonus entertainment. A successful movie trilogy could span several years, with an online component building fanbase - imagine if Josh Whedon (or someone of similar popularity) took that route and partnered with EQAL? Money.
