Shop of Horrors!!! -Daniel (LG15)

We went to alcomb antiques, sarah is good. - Daniel

WHO WAS ALEISTER CROWLEY?

Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) (last name rhymes with "holy") was a figure in late 19th and early 20th century occultism. Bree had a picture of him on the wall of her bedroom (above her bookcase, to the left of her door), leading many to assume that her religion is affiliated in some way with Thelema.

Crowley grew up in a strict Plymouth Brethren family where his mother sometimes referred to him as the "Beast of Revelations". After his father's death, he became disillusioned with his religious upbringing and began to explore alternative religions. This eventually led him to discover magick and The Golden Dawn.

Crowley and Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942) were associates in the early days of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, but became rivals after the destruction of the Golden Dawn. After leaving to found rival organizations (Crowley the A.: A.: (Argenteum Astrum) and Waite the Fellowship of the Rosy Cross), the men mocked each other in published works.

Crowley's life largely consisted of exploring the far reaches of the once great British Empire, studying various forms of Vajrayana Buddhism, theosophy, occultism, ceremonial magick, and ancient ritual. He incorporated these into his own comprehensive methodology in an extensive body of literature consisting of poetry, prose, essays, and syncretized occultism.

Dubbed the "Wickedest Man in the World" by the British yellow press, Crowley is perhaps best known for his seemingly contradictory but esoterically linked instructions called the Law of Thelema: "Do what thou Wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under Will". Sometimes taken erroneously to mean "do what you want", he published several statements explaining the meaning of the Law and how it does not equate to that. He is also associated with the number 93, since qabalistically love and will both enumerate to 93, thus it is shorthand for the Law of Thelema.

In 1920 he and a small group of followers moved to Cefalu, in Sicily, where they attempted to establish a Thelemic monastery called "The Abbey of Thelema". In his Confessions, he wrote of his life in this first Thelemic monastery.

Aleister Crowley has had an influence on Rock and Roll music,[4] although none of this music is used in the lonelygirl15 production. There are many connections between Jimmy Page of the rock band Led Zeppelin and Aleister Crowley.

In the video Aleister Crowley, Daniel reads a story from an unspecified Arizona newspaper that associates Crowley with an abduction in 1943. However, Crowley never lived in Arizona nor owned a house there, so the reference was complete fiction.

Crowley's birthday is October 12, which was the date of the fake ceremony that Lucy used to trick Daniel. The occasion is casually celebrated by modern Thelemites under the title of Crowleymas, typically with curry, wine and lots of mirth.

Aleister Crowley and Bree

The reason that Aleister Crowley has attracted so much attention is that Bree has a picture of him as part of what some describe as a "shrine" in her bedroom.

This screenshot from the A Change In My Life video clearly shows the "shrine" in the context of Bree's bedroom. (The image has been digitally enhanced to show the area with the "shrine " more clearly). Bree has never referred to Crowley directly but she has made several references to her religion

Ordo Templi Orientis

The Ordo Templis Orientis was founded by German freemason and mystic Carl Kellner. It was continued after his death by Theodor Reuss, who initiated Aleister Crowley and made him its head in Great Britain. Crowley made the OTO the first organization to accept the Law of Thelema, which is expressed as "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law."

After Reuss's death, Aleister Crowley took over the Ordo Templi Orientis as Outer Head of the Order (OHO). He served in that capacity until his death. However, after his death, there was some dispute over who Crowley had named to become his successor. These matters were taken up in court and Hymaneus Alpha (Grady McMurtry) was decided to be the true OHO. The others who thought they should have been named were not satisfied with the rulings so went on to establish their own factions of the OTO even though they are prevented from calling themselves the OTO in the United States where the rulings were decided. However, these factions still contest the legitimacy of the OTO's succession from Crowley.

Magick

Magick is "any act designed to cause intentional change. This term is often spelled with a terminal "k" to differentiate it from other practices, such as "stage magic"". "Aleister Crowley saw magick as the essential method for a person to reach true understanding of the self and to act according to one's True Will" Many people believed that Bree's ritual was going to involve a fictitious ceremony drawn in part at least from one of Crowleys real ceremonies.

People Crowley knew

Among the influential contemporary religious leaders that Crowley knew are Israel Regardie, Jack Parsons, and Allan Bennett. Crowley knew of L. Ron Hubbard, but there is no evidence they knew each other personally; only through Parson.

Coat of arms on Wikipedia

"A coat of arms or armorial bearings (often just arms for short), in European tradition, is a design belonging to a particular person (or group of people) and used by them in a wide variety of ways. They were once used by knights to identify them apart from enemy soldiers. Unlike seals and emblems, coats of arms have a formal description that is expressed as a blazon. In the 21st century, coats of arms still continue to be in use, in a variety of institutions, e.g. several universities have guidelines on how their coats of arms may be used and protect their use. The art of designing, displaying, describing, and recording arms is called heraldry."

From Wikipedia:

"The Reichsadler was an historic eagle national insignia during various times of Germany's history, including the German Empire, Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. It can be traced back to the banner of the Holy Roman Emperor. The modern German coat of arms is called Bundesadler."

A unicursal hexagram is a symbol used in various occult traditions but is often most closely linked with Aleister Crowley. The banner and footer of the former Lonelygirl15.com website design contained one, suggesting a link between Bree and Thelema

Aleister Crowley and Thelema

According to Wikipedia the unicursal hexagram, as pictured to the left, "is one of the key symbols within Thelema, the tradition founded by Aleister Crowley in the early part of the twentieth-century. Crowley did not invent the unicursal hexagram, the emblem was created by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and adapted by Crowley for his own use.

Crowley's adaptation of the unicursal hexagram placed a five petaled rose, symbolizing a pentacle (and the divine feminine), in the center; the symbol as a whole making eleven (five petals of the rose plus six points of the hexagram), the number of divine union.

Combined with the Marian Rose, the unicursal hexagram becomes Crowley's personal sigil, which is the magical union of 5 and 6 giving 11, the number of magick and new beginnings.

When Crowley introduces the unicursal hexagram in his The Book of Thoth he writes that "The lines, however, are strictly Euclidean; they have no depth."

The ritual where he makes use of the unicursal hexagram is 'Reguli' (He also uses the "averse" pentagram in it). In the commentary he writes that

"...for the True Will has no goal, its nature being To Go. Similarly, a parabola is bound by one law which fixes its relation to two lines at every point; yet it has no end short of infinity, and it constantly changes its direction."

and

"Perhaps he may come at long last, leaping beyond the limits of his own law, to conceive of that sublimely stupendous outrage to Reason, the Cone! Utterly inscrutable to him, he is yet aware that he exists in the nature thereof, that he is necessary thereto, that he is ordered thereby, and that therefrom he is sprung, from the loins of so fearful a Father."

The unicursal hexagram is not the invention of the Golden Dawn order. It has been used as early as the beginning of the 15th century in works by painter Andrey Rublev."

Note: please read the e-mail from the Creators regarding the topic of Thelema and Lonelygirl15.

Ban TJ Marsh from the Breeniverse

As most of you know community member TJ Marsh (AKA Iris2009, Tenduza, Etc.) Recently posted on the LG15 Comment Board, the LG15 Forum, and many other places, as his grieving family claiming to tell the community about his death. (See Screencap below)

This thread was locked on the LG15 Forum, due to speculation about the vailidity of this claim I would imagine.

View The Locked Forum Thread

Today TJ left a comment on Jackson Davis's myspace, claiming he was still alive. (See screencap below)

View Jackson's Myspace

TJ Marsh claimed to be dead within days of the actual suicide of community member Scarlette, making this one of the most heartless and twisted attempts for attention I have ever seen.

View the RIP Scarlette post

I am asking for a community wide ban on TJ Marsh. From the Lonelygirl15 site (Including comment boards and forums), The Chat Channels (#lg15chat, #breefm, etc.), LG15Today, Anchor Cove, Bree.FM, TheCoalition.tv, simply everywhere. We have suffered from the drama, and in this case heartache, of TJ Marsh far too long. If TJ is capable of lying about his own death, what else could he do? Is someone who lies about life and death in an attempt to manipulate emotions someone we should trust around the younger members of our community? This, my friends, is the last straw.

I set up a petition to have TJ banned from all aspects of the Breeniverse. Please show your support by signing it and leaving a comment below.

MicFranXon Recap

Written by SheetzJunkie:

Mike started off the show tonight talking about playing and winning in a laser tag convention in 2001. This same team was the focus of Mike's first web series that he created, produced and edited. Called "The Real Tag", a reality based web-series on NY's laser taggers, it got the attention of Tiger/Hasbro which earned the team development credits and gear. Considering this was before the days of youtube Mike realised it was quite an accomplishment and saw the potential of online entertainment.

Series Update:

Premier date for the series is this Sunday, April 13, 2008 (approx 11am - Noon pacific). So far the test runs for youtube are looking good (Mike thanks Glenn Rubenstein for his encoding advice).

Mike secured the actress that he felt was perfect for the series. Her name is Ellen Clifford. Ellen likes the synopsis of the series and is looking forward to interacting with the community in character. When asked, Mike explained the genre of this series as a mix of mystery, drama, and a bit of comedy. Basically a dramystedy!

Mike may compose one or two pieces of music for the series but he has found many interesting pieces to use. The first episode of the series Mike produced and posted previously while still living in NYC to test the waters. When he knew it was probable that he would move to California, he stopped production until the move as not to affect the storyline to heavily. Mike is greatful that he took the time he needed to develop the series more in depth while in California. The name of the series is "Third Triad." Mike implored everyone to go to the youtube page and subscribe.

Mike predicted on air that the impostor Jennie in LG15chat was a fake. Mike praised Hammy on her kicking and banning of the impostor.

Track List:

Good Charlotte - The Anthem
Green Day - Holiday
Flogging Molly - Light of A Fading Star
JerryPwjr - Cassie
Fuel - Shimmer
Foo Fighters - Times Like These
Elvis Crespo - Suavemente
Garbage - Stupid Girl

Having problems playing the Bebo videos?

Bebo is now using the Ooyala player for both KateModern and Sofia's Diary. We know there have been a lot of complaints about the player not functioning properly so we would like to collect all the information we can about the problem in one place.

Ooyala is a new company, and as such are fully dedicated to making this player work for everyone. If you leave a detailed description of your problem below we will make sure it gets passed along.

Suggested information:
Computer type and model:
Operating system and version:
Browser type and version:
Flash version (check here):
Do you observe the problem on LG15today, Bebo, or both:
Exact nature of the problem (give any details you think might help by describing what you actually see when the page loads.:

If you prefer to provide the information by e-mail send it to [email protected]

Note: It appears that "wildvlad" who has left several comments is a developer at Ooyala and is actually in charge of the player loading. It appears that some new stuff which was introduced by Adobe in Flash 9.0.115 is broken for some users.

We received the following by e-mail:

"Please let me know if you got any email messages from users who is using older version of Flash who has permanent access problem (i.e. after browser refresh player does not come up)."

It also indicated they are working on the problem and hope to have a solution soon.

Casio's High-Speed Camera - NYTimes.com

NYTimes.com - David Pogue discusses Casio's new high-speed camera, which takes as many as 60 images per second.

ED: Off the LG15 track, this item falls in the more general 'tools of the trade' category for producing online content.

As anyone who has used a digital camera knows, it's hard to get the shot you want because there is usually a noticable delay between when you press the button, and when the camera takes the picture. Even in older non-digital cameras which trigger faster, it has always been hard to capture an exact moment in a moving scene because of the limited reaction speed of the photographer. The solution to this for high speed sports photography or super slow motion stop-action photography (i.e. like the bullet through the apple in the video) has been very expensive cameras or arrays of cameras with precisely timed triggers and fast shutter speeds, that take multiple shots per second.

In the 1870's, Eadweard Muybridge used multiple cameras to create stop-action images of a galloping horse, proving that all four hooves leave the ground simultaneously. The cameras were triggered by the horse running through strings across it's path. The shutter speed of Muybridge's cameras was about 1/2000 of a second which matches top end of the automatic shutter speed on the Casio EX-F1 (but the manual shutter speed for the Casio is as fast as 1/40000 of a second).

The $1000 Casio EX-F1 consumer high speed digital camera not only shoots 60 frames of 6 megapixel still images as quickly as 60 frames per second (fps), it also can capture high definition or high speed video (from 1920 × 1080 pixel HD video at 60 fps down to 336 × 96 pixel super-slow motion video at 1200 fps), has a mode where it captures what happened shortly *before* you press the shutter trigger (i.e. it is constantly sampling the scene, so by pressing the button, you are just telling it to save what was recently sampled), and can trigger "burst shooting" on its own automatically when it detects motion.

Notably, the memory size, recording capacity, and battery life are listed as "to be advised" on the EXILIM Pro EX-F1 Specifications page. But it stores 60 still images in "burst shooting" mode (1 fps up to 60 fps). Also interesting, it has a recording mode called "YouTube™ Capture Mode" and a jack for an external microphone, so clearly the designers of this camera have the internet and video in mind.

Cool toy. It will be interesting to see what kinds of content appears online as cameras with these kinds of features become more common and affordable.

I spent most of the day there - people kept looking at me, but that didn't stop me. Clearly.

Like I said, names, numbers, information. I'll talk more about it tomorrow. She didn't want to be on camera - I get that - so I didn't put her on camera. I'd done enough to annoy her as it was. But I got her out. So there.

Oh, and make fun of the way I say "subwoofer" and I'll fight you.

WHAT TIME IS IT?...Coverage of Glenn on BreeFM

Glenn, live on BreeFM @11pm EST, Wednesday.

This article was written live during the show. As such it may contain significant factual errors. Over time it is hoped that these will be corrected. Please note that we try to provide a context to what is said on the show and to some degree I think that is accomplished. However with a summary like this it is hard to prevent a reader putting their own spin on what is said in this summary in a "comment" and that should not be taken at face value unless you actually listened to the show.

Glenn got sick this week.

Clarification of what was said last week and to the comments.

Last week Glenn put out the idea that OpAphid did some things that were innovative. It mixed different elements in a new form that was scalable. He did preface it by the fact it was a question trying to probe what was unique. It was not just a dynamic alternate reality game, but it was also blended with a "mass video series". Imagine 2005 before YouTube? Outside of pornography there was not much else mass market in terms of streaming video.

Lonelygirl15: there has been stories online before taking a similar approach but because of YouTube this was the first time a lot of people had seen it.

Cassieiswatching had done an alternate reality game mixed with a video but it was not dynamic and it also did not scale. A handful of people wrote to Cassie and got replies back in morse code. Some of the videos were very well done but the games were not the most participatory.

With OpAphid Glenn wanted the "players" to have a larger impact on the game/story. Some of Glenn's puzzles took as long to create as it took people to solve them (sometimes up to a week). Because it was not a for profit business it allowed some cool things to be done. Glenn wanted more people to participate on a greater level. There was in person interaction and greater on line interaction. There were friendships and rivalries with the online interactions.

Glenn is NOT trying to say he invented ARGs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Neither is he trying to say that Lonelygirl15 was not popular before him. In fact it had spiked before Glenn joined the team. It had been speculated that it might be an ARG and Miles wanted to include ARG elements but this was easier to achieve by including an ARG such as OpAphid. In the same way they brough in Jan Libby after Glenn was gone. Glenn was brought in to develop interactivity for Lonelygirl15. Today the interactivity is more modular.

Glenn feels very fortunate to have the place in the community that he has. When Glenn started doing his radio show a lot of people were dissatisfied with Lonelygirl15. People were most satisfied in the summer of 2006. Glenn's participation with Lonelygirl15 probably helped when the show was beginning to lag. Since Glenn left the show it had began to lag again by the time his radio show had begun.

It reminds Glenn of Kevin Smith. You can read one negative comment and you feel a need to respond to it.

V9 asked Glenn about Blood Cell. Glenn has checked out the trailer. "It is what it is".

What is right and what is wrong with online video?
Glenn thinks Lonelygirl15, KateModern, RedEarth88, Maddison Atkins, and the "community video series" such as the Coalition, LonelyJew15 etc etc are doing it right, and everyone else is doing it wrong.

Historical perspective
Back in the mid/late 90s there was a revolution/evolution. A lot of attention was placed on the internet and the arena of video games. It really all started in 1993 with 3DO. Multimedia came about because of the introduction of CD-rom technology into computers. It was going to allow for different types of experiences. Not only would you be able to watch movies but games would have a more cinematic quality. This was the start of the entertainment business looking at video games as a new source of revenue. People thought this could be a replacement for the standard movie experience.

Multimedia coincided with the first Mosaic web browser and people began to talk about the World Wide Web. The internet had existed for many years before with BBS and other terminal based activities. You could check email, browse news groups, gopher etc. IRC was around. MUDs were around. The WWW was like witnessing the dawn of a new media. There was a term called "screenagers" and Glenn was hired to be editor in chief for Blast. It would be "Wired for the younger set".

Glenn had been working with Leo Laporte on a radio show called "On Computers". They had a live chat. "On Computers" had thousands of listeners but there would be very few people in chat because there were not that many people online. Leo talked to Glenn about Mosaic. There was very little to look at on the WWW. The first band to have a homepage was the Beastie Boys. In the summer of '94 the web was born in the form we know it now. The 'information super highway" became the buzz phrase.

If you get the Science channel there is a show called "Download: The True Story of the Internet" It is awesome!

http://science.discovery.com/tv/download/about/about.html

From 94-99 we had this era. Everyone had a web site. It was all about "hype". There were a lot of bad web sites and a lot of "shitty web games". It was Hollywood seeing that there was money in the "game thing". They either wanted a piece of the pie or they wanted to mess it up so people would go back to watching movies. Jurrasic Park the game for example was horrible. "It is not just a game it is an experience" became the buzz phrase.

It is not that "interactive" is bad, but they did not understand the marketplace. They did not know what made the WWW work. They did not understand what made a good video game.

Glenn liked "The Hoard" for 3DO starring Kirk Cameron.

They had a phrase for all of this. The era of Digital Hollywood. What we learned is that Hollywoods involvement alone is not enough. It was a very costly experience for Hollywood.

Looking forward
When Glenn watches the new video series he sees people ignoring what has worked.

Look at Lonelygirl15, KateModern, RedEarth88, Maddison Atkins and our "community video series". Then you have the like of Smosh and the Guild. Beyond cpm you cannot monetize a viral video.

Now ARGs are getting attention because of big tie ins. Batman, Lost, Cloverfield work because people are interested in the shows/movies. You are not going to see an indie movie come out and be a hit because of an ARG (eg Napoleon Dynomite or Juno.). Blair Witch was more of an illusion. Even the NIN ARG had a pre-existing audience and the ARG built up the expectations. If ARGs could make or break a product it would be a very different world.

Hollywood is looking for online components.

The new 90210: There is a character who goes by the name of Silver. She posts videos on YouTube. It will either be launched by an online marketing campaign, or some other online component.

NBC: new season will have online components to everything. They want to extend the experience. They will call it "interactive".

Sofia's diary is a good example of this. It is essentially just voting. Whether you call it synergistic or supplemental it is not really interactive.

Blood Cell: it is online video but that's about it. They have Jess. It is video and it is online....what do you want?

Hollywood is treating it like everything else, just in smaller proportions. Everyone thinks they understand how to use the internet so they must be an expert if they already know how to produce a TV series. $10k an episode, no problem.

Michael Eisner is smarter than the rest because he partnered with Big Fantastic. You want to partner with people who know what they are doing. (Michael, if you are reading this, give Glenn Rubenstein a call, or send him an e-mail at [email protected]).

When you don't see any real communication with the audience you are not going to build a community. The audience is being entertained, but it is not being engaged. "We" get it right. We go about it in a madder that offers people something greater. Whether its in character interaction, dead drops, "on rails" interactions etc it is all greater than we are seeing out of the Hollywood people.

People are pumping money into these new series. This will be the era Digtal Hollywood 2.0: the worst aspects of Hollywood: people who are too arogant to figure out what actually works. It will give us some of the worse possible online series imaginable. These people are not smart enough to copy what has worked before online. They will take what worked in movies/tv and dump it online.

Chad Vadar and Smosh are doing original comedy online. There have not been a lot of online series that have worked.

Glenn hopes he can take what has worked already and take it in new directions with RedEarth88. Hopefully it will grab some of the attention and money. $5K per episode is too much money!!!! Glenn has a kick ass power point presentation, so if you know any VC or angel investors with say $50K-100K, then hook them up with Glenn ([email protected]). There is a business model, so there is a way to make money off this.

If it was not for this community none of these shows would mean anything. It is a testament to how much you can engage an audience. This is its own unique media and its own art form in a way. It is crazy how far we have come as a community.

Mathieas asked Glenn:

1. Is Glenn character driven or plot driven?
The plot for Glenn is the blueprint of the story. That is how he starts thinking about it. From there the characters become the people involved in the story. Glenn's weakness is that once he starts involving the characters he becomes fascinated with the back story of each character and becomes fascinated with "their plots" He wants every character to be compelling. That is the influence he gets from comic books. It is almost like each character has their own mini series. For example, Tachyon has her own existence beyond RedEarth88. Even Brother (who is one of the least developed characters ....he is mainly there to serve the plot in RedEarth88) originally did have a back story.

2 If Glenn had the budget what would he add?
More episodes, more interaction and then an expanded universe with a much bigger story.

3 How does Glenn view the 1st person vs 3rd person point of view dilemma?
Glenn used to think the uploading of videos by characters was a weakness......as in it was a limitation. But, it is actually part of what works about the medium. It adds to the experience. The characters have to have a perception of who is watching the videos. It would not make sense for Rachel to have an understanding of the greater danger. You have to construct the plot to the point that it makes sense who the audience is in terms of the characters. Rachel thinks it is random people. She feels safe in posting videos.

With LG15 you have a big problem because the "bad guys" can watch the video. It is different per series. As Glenn comes up with new ideas of series he has to think through who the character sees as an audience. There needs to be a good logic for why the characters are posting the videos. LG15 experimented with private vs public transmissions.

The "warspy device" is a great core "gimmick" for overcoming the problem with a 3rd person camera angle.

The world that we live in is one where there are many cameras so that increases the potential for the genre in terms of having to upload videos.

Keeping it real: sometimes you can be too real for the people you work with. If the relationship matters to you let go of your reality and go with the flow. Being right is cool. Glenn likes to be right and his track record is pretty good. Glenn tries to have his finger on the pulse. It sucks to be right if you cannot ride the wave.

I would recommend using magnatune, creative commons, or your original music. If the music isn’t cleared we cannot use it in one of our videos. Hope that helps!

P Monkey email

Hey guys. Here's what Bree said in the email. Well...you can see it for yourself.

Daniel,

I know you’re probably worried. But everyone here is so kind. It’s been great being with the Hymn these last few days. Honestly, if I had to complain about anything, it’s that I only wish they’d treat P. Monkey with the same kindness.

They tried to replace him -- can you believe that?! One morning I woke up and next to my bed was this toy box. The card was signed “an everlasting admirer.” It had this silly puppet in it with strings attached. To think I could ever accept another boy toy in my life other than P. Monkey! Or should that be girl toy? Wink.

Of course I had to tell the Hymn if they want me to sing, P. Monkey is my only back-up singer. Ha! So I put their puppet right back in the stinky box he came from. Seriously, the thing reeked. All musty and stuff. The label on it said Alcombe, so basically that’s where you should go if you wanna smell like a retirement home...

I miss you guys. Hopefully we’ll talk soon.

Bree

The Elders

The Elders, also known as The Order of Denderah (A Solid Lead, April 26th, 2007) are the utmost figures of authority in the Hymn of One.

Many members of the Hymn of One believe it is an honor to be in the presence of an Elder. They greatly respect and revere these men and women. Because they are so important, Elders are extremely well protected by their aggressive, inhumane bodyguards called Shadows, who cannot leave their sides unless permission is given.
However, it seems that the Elders are nothing more than the greedy masterminds behind the Order and more specifically, the Ceremony. The Elders are very old, as their name implies, and in order to stay alive as long as possible, they receive a transfusion of the blood of trait positive girls, such as Bree. Each transfusion extends an Elder's life 40 - 50 years. Apparently there are twelve Elders who rotate in turn for a chance to be the recepient of a new Ceremony girl's life-giving blood.
