JULIA VAN HELDEN: KM Puzzle solved

Julia's clue "CATBAGS" was an anagram for the website Gabcast.com. Fans discovered Julia's account, where she left the following message for her friends:
Julia said:

Hi, it's me Jules. Look, the only time I'm going to be able to get away from Rupert is at the party he's holding to unveil Michelle Clore's last work. It's going to be a private collector's house around the corner from The Louvre. I'm gonna make a run for it when he does his speech. Please be there ready. Thank you so much. Kay guys, I love you.

WHAT TIME IS IT?...Coverage of Glenn on BreeFM

Glenn Rubenstein, live on BreeFM @11pm EST, Wednesday.

It is without a net. It is off the cuff. Glenn has done the "real" radio thing before. Back when he did the show with Leo Laporte they would drive in early and prep for the show. They had a "lunch box computer" with a built in screen. They needed a satellite uplink. Today most music stations are completely automated. You can tell if there is a generic radio DJ because they get a "feed" from a larger station.

Alternative rock and urban is not quite as cookie cutter. However, with pop radio it is very common to use a "feed". In the last 20 years you could argue that the most sustained growth is "butt rock". Country radio has always done well. Contemporary rock stations do not have a long shelf life. Glenn loves looking at industry growth and trends.

When Glenn was young he sold a bunch of video games in order to buy a Sega Genesis. A lot of the parents began to ask him for advice. Glenn's mom told him he was good at it and since he was good with English she suggested he pitch the local Petaluma newspaper that he write a game column. He actually wanted to get into video game design. Back in 1990 you could not go to school to design games. Surprisingly Glenn heard back in a couple of days and they liked the sample he sent in. The video game thing was just beginning to explode. Glenn became a columnist for the Argus Courier with a circulation of around 10,000. He was only 14 and was not paid. He knew he could buy or rent the games but he called up the editor in chief (Andy Eddy) of the game magazine he read and got some advice and contact numbers. His column ran every Saturday. Two months later Glenn was looking at the San Francisco Chronicle and his mom pointed out an article similar to what Glenn had been writing and suggested he send in one of his articles. Carla Melanouchi, the author of the article called up Glenn and was impressed with what he had done. Carla covered video games but was really not a big fan of them. Glenn really hit it off with the editor in chief and they talked about games. Glenn pitched the 12 games of Christmas as a feature story idea and was told to go for it. The Sunday Examiner Chronicle had a circulation of over a million and might have been as much as three million at the time. A week after Christmas Glenn was going to CES and suggested that he file a report from the show. Nintendo was going to be debuting a lot of the super Nintendo stuff. His dad took him. The report went really well. His CES report included coverage of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sega was delighted to see it get prominent placement in the newspaper. Larry Cramer asked Glenn if there was enough to write a weekly coverage article. A year later Glenn dropped out of high school because he was busy with games, conventions etc. Glenn wrote for the Examiner for 9 years but the syndication people thought the game industry was just a fad.

By Glenn's 15th birthday he had become a columnist for a major metropolitan newspaper. Glenn's mother encouraged him to send stuff to radio stations and that led to Glenn meeting Leo Laporte. In 1993 Leo suggested a radio show about computers and that is how Glenn got into radio. Some of his teachers did not "get" what Glenn was doing. In 10th grade, the busy schedule of his career was conflicting with school so he graduated early by taking the Proficiency test, which is a high school equivalency diploma.

Glenn's List of Misty-Eyed Moments

TEASE: last week Glenn said he would keep a running tally of times when he cried during the week. Glenn is sentimental but it is made more extreme due to a medical reason regarding glands and moisture (it affects the threshold for tearing up). When we come back we will talk about:

THE LIST!!!!!!!
------------
1. The episode of This American Life with narration by Johnny Depp
2. The passing of broadcast journalist Tim Russert...it is weird to have someone in TV news that is so likable. Glenn likes Tucker Carlson and Pat Buchanan although he does not agree with their political views. Tim passed away last Friday and Glenn challenged anyone to watch the Tom Brocko coverage from the NBC offices in Washington DC.
3. Rocky Balboa movie....the speech at the end to his son. It is an emotional journey. The first two Rocky movies were largely a young man's story about how hard he could hit. Rocky Balbo is an old man's story about your ability to survive and leaving your mark. What does it mean to make it through that.

...the list was shorter than Glenn expected.

Something that made Glenn laugh: In Europe the seasons are 6 episodes long. The UK series Peep Show. It is a bit like a modern day Odd Couple. The show is so wrong. Peep Show raises the bar. It stars actors David Mitchell and Robert web. They are the two actors who also do the "mac ads" in the UK.

Go see the Incredible Hulk! Surprisingly solid movie and really enjoyable.

Here is the archive of of stories from LG15 TODAY concerning Glenn's radio show on BreeFM.

New Show based on The Middleman Comic

Trailer for the new ABC Family original series THE MIDDLEMAN based on the comic from Viper by Javier Grillo-Marxuach premiering June 16th, 2008!

If you like comics or you enjoyed the LOST Experience (ARG that filled in some of the back-story of the TV show LOST), you already have a reason to check out The Middleman. This show and the comic it is based on were created by creative genius, the Emmy award winning Javier_Grillo-Marxuach, who was a producer and writer for LOST and was responsible for much of the mythology of that show.

Javi's introduction to 'the middleman':

Watch the premier episode online at abcfamily.com here:
The Middleman, season 1, episode 1.

Here is an article telling more about Javi's work and the background of how this new show, The Middleman, came into existence, starting with a pilot Javi wrote ten years ago: Grillo-Marxuach's strange journey to 'The Middleman'.

"Javier Grillo-Marxuach has worked on complicated TV shows from 'The Pretender' to 'Lost' with stops on 'Charmed', 'Kyle XY' and 'Medium' in between."

"Then there's his new TV show 'The Middleman', premiering June 16th on ABC Family. It's based on his Viper Comics title of the same name, which was actually a TV pilot script that was turned into a comic."

"The show is airing on ABC Family. It features the adventures of a young temp, Wendy Watson, who is recruited into a partnership by a mysterious operative known only as The Middleman. Together they team up to battle monsters, villains and other threats the rest of us thought only lived in comic books."

To check out The Middleman in comic book form (with long excerpts available online) see:
http://www.vipercomics.com/features/the_middleman.asp
(note: reading the comic book will act as a spoiler for the TV show - but it's so worth it.)

Here is a trailer for the summer 2005 release of volume one of the Viper comic series "The Middleman" - written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, illustrated by Les Mcclaine. It's interesting to compare this trailer to the current TV pilot - looks like they are following the comic book very closely.

In The LOST Experience, which he produced, Javi played a ranting talk radio conspiracy nut named DJ Dan, providing commentary and crazy theories about all kinds of random things, but also helping to uncover the Dharma Initiative and the evil Hanso Foundation. The culmination of the Lost Experience ARG was this video:

Has LG15 gone off the rails? Can it be fixed?

There was a time when LG15 was not about a bunch of twentysomethings trying to overcome an implausible global conspiracy of religious orders and pharmaceutical companies. Admittedly, that stuff was always there in the background, but I remember when an LG15 video was appealing because it featured engaging characters facing the difficulties of growing up. The series was populated with quirky and unique individuals who created a charming intimacy through talking to the audience about their lives. There was very much a sense of a isolated young people (Bree, Jonas, to a lesser extent Daniel) reaching out to a larger world through YouTube. Bree, Jonas, Daniel, Sarah, Taylor and Spencer really came off as actual people with insecurities, personal weaknesses, passions, idiosyncrasies and unique talents. They could be slotted into character types, but they never felt restricted to them.

I remember being nervous when the show moved from a girl blogging in her bedroom to being about teen fugitives on the run. But the videos managed to maintain the level of intimacy that Bree had achieved in her bedroom. While the Order was certainly present, the series focused on the concept of people thrown together by circumstance and dealing with each other. This was accomplished through really strong writing; standout pieces of work include Jonas' social ineptitude and neediness, Daniel's tentative friendship with Jonas, Bree's growing emotional independence, Emma's shattered innocence, Sarah's sense of alienation, etc.. The writing continued to infuse the characters with very distinct qualities.

Somewhere in the third season, that seems to have vanished, and now the show is really all about hot young actors on the run from a global conspiracy, trying to unravel some aspect of it, generally failing miserably. And it's gotten boring. The team isn't going to overthrow the Order; that would end the show. So there's really no tension or anticipation in the endless Order investigations. Most of the videos now are focused on the TAAG trying to unravel the latest plot, the most recent clue, the next avenue of penetrating the conspiracy, all which is doomed to fail. The characters have become little more than mouthpieces for the ongoing, neverending, perpetually directionless mythology arc. There was a time when the Order was merely the catalyst which caused all these disparate personalities to end up living in the same house. Now the Order has come to define the show and the more we see of the Order, the more boring it is. Amanda Goodfried's appearances stopped being scary a long time ago, and the Order isn't particularly effective if they can't find the TAAG's rented house. The Order is a concept that really needs to stay in the background, because its increased prominence only highlights how the Creators don't have a consistent backstory, purpose or methodology for the villains -- if they even ever bother to come up with one at all. Furthermore, the Order isn't going to be defeated so long as the show is running anyway.

I miss LG15 being about human beings. I miss LG15 being about people trying to make their way through the world and make lives for themselves. I miss LG15 being about growing up and facing a troubling world filled with offputting people. "Redearth88" feels more like LG15 than LG15 has in awhile.

I'm aware that there is apparently a significant level of turnover in the writing department for this series, and that often means that the personal characteristics that were so prominent in characters can often evapourate.

What could be done to set this series right? That question, of course, assumes that you don't like the myth-arc oriented approach, which isn't necessarily the case.

Thanks Anonymous (above) for your defense :) Ibrahim, thank you so much for your insightful comments. I think that lately LG15 has headed in a much more positive direction, and a lot of that is due to Amanda's hard work to "bring it back to its roots." She's been here since the beginning so she gets the importance of character and the "normal" kids vibe the best. It is hard with a large writing team and a lot of turnover, but I personally really enjoyed the Prom videos and felt that it was an example of LG15 at its best: intriguing, character driven, fun, scary, and interactive all in one. Regardless, your points are great and posts like these definitely influence how we approach new shows that we are producing.

Hot tickets to shed light on future of media

Where TV and the Web converge, there is Hulu

"The issue boils down to this: Will low-cost original programming, à la "lonelygirl15" or those grainy, amateur YouTube clips, continue to dominate online video? Or will the little guys get crowded out in a new, heavily commercialized era, led by expensive, slickly produced studio shows that premiered on broadcast or cable? "

The Origin of 12 in 12

The fan-generated idea that eventually led to the 12 in 12 concept, as discussed here on the forum. The Lonelygirl15 Season One Finale in August 2007 included 12 videos in roughly 12 hours, billed as "12 in 12."

Memory Lane Memorial High School on Second Life

Second Life, Metaverse: Over 180 of Second Life's best known fashion designers have spent the past month preparing for a 4-private island simulator classic high school prom event to support the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life venture on SL.

On the weekend of June 14 & 15, SL residents will be given a chance to step back in time to relive the classic American high school prom in a totally immersive setting-set in the middle of an island of over 262,144m2, complete with car shop, working classrooms, chalkboards, offices, libraries, gym, locker rooms, shower and lav, and virtually every detail you can think of. This memory lane-invoking high school is built by CaSimone Aquitaine, who owns the Second Life designer store Topaz Square and has a background in engineering in RL. In citing her inspiration and drive, she recounts the moving story of her friend Marianne Thompson, dearly known as "Mickey", who passed away due to lymphoma, but did not get the chance to attend her high school prom, "I had no clue why this build was so important to me, and in my tears I finally knew there was a purpose to what seemed a state of creative madness."
