Tubefilter tells Web Series Creators to Step It Up

Web Series Creators: It’s Time To Step It Up

Are you ready? 2009 is here and this is the year we get serious.

About a month ago, I ran into Felicia Day in the local Coffee Bean and here she was, fresh off her groundbreaking deal for The Guild season 2 with Microsoft and Sprint, asking the guy behind the counter if it was okay to pin up one of her promotional bookmarks for the show.

And Strike.TV, I’m talking to you too - Mary Feuer might be the only show creator on the lineup that’s not content with just handing over publicity and marketing to someone else. And it’s been paying off. Her series With The Angels has stood out. I can interact with Mary and her team in at least half a dozen places on the web and that’s kept me watching the series.

  1. I do think not going and getting your audience is a pitfall for some creators. Somewhere along the line, it become "uncool" to promote your own work, which is crazy. I do think some web creators hope the content will just magically get discovered, and make minimal efforts at marketing. This, in my opinion, is a huge mistake. There is an audience for all types of web series right now, but your fans are not going to help you find that audience if you won't even make the effort to do so.

For those thinking about a series or currently doing one, I would look to Mary Feuer as an example, as she was actively on Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, StrikeTV, and probably other places, and from my experience, always interacting with the fans and always around. This does add another, perhaps meta, intimacy to the series, even though it is meta, and it does make you want to match it even more, believe me. You feel a personal connection in that way and you almost don't want to let her down by not watching and interacting!

This is a great article and I hope all current and future web series creators take note.

  2. What shows are you thinking about that might do better with more interaction and marketing by their creators?

  3. I follow many web series, anon, both in this community and outside. Its just advice.

Some creators aren't creators yet. 2009 is going to be a big year, with the current economy making the cheaper option of web series more attractive. Its especially helpful to those who have not even started yet.

  4. I think twitter is a wonderful tool that LG15 should have utilized sooner. The increased twitter on the LG15 front has felt really personal and is a great way to connect with your viewers in a meaningful way. Just my thoughts. I enjoy following With the Angels, Taffy, Felicia Day & now LG15 on twitter.

Its also a good tool to show off things happening within the community and to show they are aware of fan shows. They've tweeted a few fan videos.

Just the random thoughts of a twitter-addict.
