WHAT TIME IS IT?...LIVE Coverage of Glenn on BreeFM

Glenn, live on BreeFM @11pm EST, Wednesday.
Glenn went to a screening of " Better Off Dead". Curtis Armstrong was supposed to be there but he had to cancel at the last minute. It was cool to see it on the big screen and listen to a Q & A with the director ( Savage Steve Holland). Diane Franklin has not been seen much in the last 20 years. She looks like she has not aged a day. She is not French. The accent was acting. It was a big deal because it was part of San Francisco's Sketch Fest. They have revival screenings.

Glenn had a great experience. He picked up the tickets at will call. The screening was at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco. They had a screening of Harold and Maud earlier.

Glenn saw the movie on sneak preview when it first opened. He must have now seen it over 100 times. It is up there with " Just One Of The Guys". Watching it on the big screen you see things that you had not noticed before.

Glenn talked about " Arrested Development" which he has deemed the funniest comedy ever on television. It shares a name with a band with the same name. There is a line in a song: "return from whence you came". In one episode, Will Arnet throws things into the ocean and says "return to whence you came". The band sued the show for having the same name so there were some inside jokes.

It's Your Move
A long time ago the world had not experience Jason Bateman. He had been in Silver Spoon. in the 1984 season NBC gave him his own show: "It's Your Move". This was a first of its kind for the 80s. Ferris Bueller / Parker Lewis owes it debt.

What makes the show funny was that it was created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavittt who would go on to create Married With Children. The show becomes about the predicaments the 2 characters get into. It manages to keep the premise of a guy in his 30s and a boy of 14 being adversaries.

There are a lot of production similarities between "Married With Children" and "It's Your Move". Some people have suggested that some episodes are essentially copies. In Season 6 Bud Bundy is going to tell people he is a rapper called Grand Master B. there is a long list of thing they think up to call him and the are really funny. Edd O'Neil (Al Bundy) was very under rated. If you can cheery pick your fav episodes it is great but with Its Your Move it is solid all the way through.

Because there was so much controversy with Its your move Glenn thinks the made Married With Children more over the top to make it more of a satire. The even matching of the two characters is what made it interesting. Up until Arrested Development the rest of the World did not give Jason Bateman his props. Jason Bateman has similarities to Micheal J. Fox. He really flourished with Arrested Development. It would make a good essay to compare Micheal Burton and Matt Burton, the characters he played in the two shows.

Glenn talked about the promos NBC and CBS did in the 90s. It would be like we are the world but with the cast of NBC singing.

Glenn talked about "first run syndication": Star Trek, Friday the 13th, Its a living, We've Got It Made, Small Wonder, Charles In Charge, My Secret identity, Superboy, Out Of This World (if you try and defend it you are high). All of these shows with the exception of star trek were not competing with prime time. To UHF the shows were gold in obscure time slot. First run syndication was the equivalent of basic cable.

NAPTE is a convention where people used to go. The studios would have huge booths and sell everything. They needed to sell their shows to the affiliates. There were also show that would be made available like LA Law. It was second only to VSDA (which is for video stores) which had a ton of celebs. You are selling the idea that you can get station to go with it for shared advertising. They keep some shows on the air so that they can eventually syndicate them. Jump Street would be an example of a show that was kept alive so it could go into syndication.

What's Happening Now (they got back the entire cast), Punky Bruster, Silver Spoon, Webster, Too Close For Comfort, Hercules, Sci Factor all went to first run syndication.

Glenn's role models were John Ritter on "Three's Company" and Michael J. Fox on "Family Ties".

Glenn talked about the most famous LDS commercial from the 1980's featuring Alfonso Ribeiro from Silver Spoons and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Glenn finished up with a rant about Tom Vu.

From Wikipedia: "Tuan "Tommy" Vu is a Vietnamese-American poker player, real estate investor and speaker best remembered as an infomercial personality in the late 1980s and early 1990s."

Glenn congratulated Jenni Powell and Logan Rapp (formerly of RedEarth88) for winning LG15: The Show Is Yours with their show "LG15: The Missfits"

  3. Interesting how readearth has just completely disappeared from the radar with this guy. Who cares about his obsession with things from the 80's. He's like one of those chicks who peaked in high school, got married too young, popped out some kids and watch soaps all day.

  4. Anon, clearly you know absolutely nothing about Glenn. Even with OpAphid his angle was always a brilliant and extensive knowledge of pop culture. Glenn may have accomplished more than most as a teen but he has gone on from there to innovate in everything he touches. He may not have hit is big financial hit yet but he remains a force to contend with.

Glenn has been quite clear that he would like to continue RedEarth88 but only if he can do it with financial backing where he can do it right. The creators have not even been able to get a financial sponsor for LG15: The Resistance so clearly it if not easy in this market.

Anon, clearly you have a personal axe to grind. That is your choice but perhaps you should look at your own contribution to the World before knocking those who have actually had a constructive input to our enjoyment of the Breeniverse.

  5. I have to agree with modelmotion here, although I normally just ignore anonymous comments here at the blogspot.

Glenn is gracious enough to maintain contact with fans of his work through BreeFM, and I enjoy his show every week. Glenn knows there are others who do as well.

Glenn only mentioned Redearth88 in a well-deserved congratulatory comment directed at two former Redearth collaborators.
