EQAL Foregoes Originals, Gets Cookin’ With Paula Deen

What does it say about the state of original episodic content online when one of its biggest success stories believes its future lies in traditional TV?

Paula Deen loves Miley Cyrus . . . cooking Gorilla Bread on Good Morning America

http://GetCookin.PaulaDeen.com - We had such a fun time traveling from Savannah to NYC. I love going on GMA, Chris and the rest of the team are so nice. And, we got to meet Miley! :)

  2. "We have taken a shift, currently, from recurring serial dramas to focus on working with existing entertainment properties,” said Goodfried.

this article really gives a lot of hints about the future of eqal. not that anyone really believed the Resistance was coming back anytime soon, but this is probably another nail in the coffin.

  3. The Resistance coffin has a lot of nails. We don't have to worry about zombie Bree crawling out of her grave.

  4. i feel cheated by eqal.
it's like "lets do popular things to get money" instead of what people loved.

  5. I love how NewTeeVee always works as a propaganda machine for EQAL rather than actually reporting what's happening.
Might as well just let Amanda write the news.

And bloggers wonder why "real" journalists don't take them serious...

  6. If Eqal wants to leave the world of original online content, I say good riddance to them. But don't you think they ought to fix LG15.com before they go? After all, it is their legacy - do they really want to leave their legacy looking like a piece of shit?

  7. If anyone is still holding out hope for The Resistance, they should read this:

    http://www.adweekmedia.com/aw/content_display/mediaupfront/news/special-reports/e3i6fda8a789c0468ebd597ea767bb07624?pn=1

    Quotes include:
“In terms of scripted series drama, we’re getting very far away from that,” said Greg Goodfried, co-founder, president and COO of EQAL, the producer of lonelygirl15, KateModern and other online series.

Goodfried said that EQAL has focused its business on building and managing social experiences for existing properties, such as CBS’ current series Harper’s Island. The company is not planning any lonelygirl encores.

  8. And, of course, the LOL comment:

According to Goodfried, the company’s most recent series—a lonelygirl follow-up called The Resistance—drew roughly 1.5 million views over 12 episodes, or a few hundred thousand views per episode.

"EQAL is halting development of new standalone series, in favor of running the online video properties for existing brands"

"Co-founder and CEO Miles Beckett all but predicted the shift during our Year End Digital Review and Mixer in December: he noted that EQAL’s existing business model—creating shows and then getting big brand sponsors (like Neutrogena for lonelygirl15) to pay up—wasn’t scalable or viable for the long term. Co-founder and COO Greg Goodfried told NewTeeVee that advertisers wanted to sponsor properties that already had large audiences—not new series that weren’t guaranteed to succeed."
