Eqal Buys out Spark Capital

Recently, Eqal finalized an agreement to buy out one of its original investors, Spark Capital. Less than two years ago, Spark Capital was one of the major investors in Eqal’s $5 million dollar round of financing. While on first look, the fact that investors are jumping ship might seem troubling but in reality it is a win-win situation for both parties.

One of the major reasons for the split was Eqal’s shift from an original content producer to a web service company. Last year Eqal’s redirected its focus towards developing its content platform, Umbrella, and began developing networks for various celebrities such as Anthony Zuiker and Paula Deen. According to Eqal CEO, Miles Beckett, Spark was more interested in the original content creation and less excited about building platforms for other content creators. Eqal, on the other hand, felt that its future lie with helping other content creators by providing technology, advertising support, marketing and distribution.

Purchasing Spark’s interest in the company allowed Eqal to move ahead with its own agenda while partnering with other investors who shared Eqal’s vision. Since the buy out, Eqal has brought on additional investors such as Scott Banister, Paypal board member and chairman of the social network site, Zivity, and fund manager, Wojtek Uzdelewicz. The advantage for Spark is obvious; it gets its pre-crash, money back, unlike Spark’s investment in another web video startup, Veoh, which went bankrupt last month. In fact, given how little money there is in online video right now, not losing money can be considered a win.

The separation between the two companies was amicable. Also, the fact that Eqal had the resources to buy out one of its major investors is, at least, an indication that the company is doing well. For its part, Beckett is very happy with the company’s decision to move into a service roll. Furthermore, he believes that there still is an opportunity for people to make money producing their own content. He wants to position Eqal as the company to help these ‘micro-studios,’ by providing the necessary services that they need in order to monetize their content.

  1. I want to thank Miles for taking time out of his day to answer my questions.

  2. since the usual way these investments end up is either (a) the company gets bought out by someone bigger, or (b) bankruptcy, EQAL continues to break new ground.

  3. does this mean we'll get season 2 of The Resistance, now?

  4. Interesting.

"Spark was more interested in the original content creation"

Was it not Spark that restricted spending to only technology and not media creation as part of their investment?

Still, as long as Eqal has investors it is a good thing.

  5. So I guess this means they aren't ever going to go back to making shows. Sad.

  6. I think I read somewhere, maybe here that they were looking to hire programmers, maybe the new investment will allow them to improve their website software.

  7. I'm just glad that it sounds like they are doing well.

  8. Glad the guys are doing well enough to do this but feel it may be the final nail in the coffin for their own original productions

  9. I appreciate the write-up, but do you have a source for any of this?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Aside from Miles Beckett what other sources would be helpful Thad? I could always do a follow up article if its something people think is necessary.

  11. Not that I doubt you, but I could also say "According to Miles Beckett, EQAL has declared bankruptcy. However, they are returning to their roots and starting a low-budget production of LG15: The Resistance Season 2. Jessica Lee Rose will star as Zombie Bree."

I'm just wondering where this information COMES from, because the article does not contain any way to verify the news.

  12. The information comes from Miles, I didn't think I needed to publish a transcript.

  13. Here's a better question, Thad...why the hell would Mathieas lie about this? :P

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thad, there was actually a post on NewTeeVee about this.
In fact, that's what I originally thought this post was based on.

So if Math is conning us, he's conning NewTeeVee as well. *shrugs*

  15. Mathieas is a liar, someone check if his pants are on fire.

    ReplyDelete
  16. ...anon, I never said Mathieas was lying. As a matter of fact, I said "Not that I doubt you," and I meant it. However, this blog is a Blogspot account created for free in order to report news tangentially related to a web series that no one watches anymore (and really, barely even exists anymore). Anyone can create a Blogspot. Anyone can post on this one. It's not exactly the most reputable source, and there were no sources to back it up. I just wanted to see an article from a more reputable website or a press release or something.

Thank you Renegade for supplying that.

  17. I would love for you to explain how it isn't reputable. Also, according to you for the cost of 1.95 a month, the cost of web hosting, something automatically becomes reputable?
Also, I don't get where you say there is no source backing it up, the source is none other than the CEO of Eqal, this isn't wikipedia we actually use primary sources.

Also, this story was written before I'd seen newteevee had written one.

Whatever...I guess the next couple of weeks are really going to piss you off.

  18. This would be a fine time for Miles to swoop in here in a helicopter and contribute to this fine re-enactment of Lord of the Flies.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes anyone can create a blog, but this one has been around for 3 years so its not exactly a fly by not operation.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No one's attacking you, Mathieas. It's just not common to write an article on a blog without providing at least one verifiable source, and I was only asking for that. There's no need to mention that your source is Miles again, because I understand that, but it's not verifiable, and as I mentioned above, I could make a post saying that Miles said anything, really, and it would have as much credibility as your post. I believed you, and I was never calling into question the validity of your article, but I would like to read a more reputable article.

As for the reputability of this site versus the reputability of NewTeeVee, while this site has been around for three years, ANYONE can post here. Mathieas's articles are always well-written and I have never found one of them to have any errors, but that Jeremy kid that everyone seems to hate goes through bouts where he posts completely irrelevant crap five times a day. Most of it is his own lackluster production.

NewTeeVee doesn't do that. NewTeeVee hires writers and that costs more than 1.95 a month, not that this has anything to do with price. The fact of the matter is, NewTeeVee is a BUSINESS that sets out to provide news on the ways new media impacts story telling and journalism. This is a blog that does so.

Now, Renegade has provided me with another article. No one disbelieves you. I'm happy, you're happy, can we stop this?

  21. thad, i totally understand where you are a coming from, its just a misunderstanding. lg15today is not the new york times! (like imagine if the new york times failed to critically investigate bush's claims that iraq had WMDs!)

i don't immediately trust everything on newteevee either. it was either newteevee or tubefilter that got the story wrong on whether the misfits would have a production budget last year.

also, it may not be noticed widely, but there are many times that lg15today.com has posted stories that later got picked up by newteevee and tubefilter (and even linked by them!) also newteevee and tubefilter (more so tubefilter, though) have more conflicts of interest because their ability to profit it tied to the profitability of the webseries industry. that being said, lg15today has evolved over time and the jeremy stuff was a different story.

  22. I think this Thad person just wants to be Renegade 2.0.

  23. I don't know how many of you know this, but Matt is a published author.

  24. Holy crap, I just asked for a verifiable source.

  25. It is not unusual for a VC firm to want to "cash out" from a venture. This is normally done via an IPO or selling the company to a larger public company (or sometimes private company). I think it is more likely that Spark saw that neither of these options would be available to Eqal in the near future, especially given that its relationship with CBS seems to have come to a close.

What might be interesting to speculate on is why Zivity is interested. That appears to be a "pay to play" site and perhaps they are considering taking advantage of the umbrella platform.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Do not worry about "Anon", Thad. Their posts expose their motives and should be treated accordingly.
