Over the past few years, one of the most important shifts in the digital world has been the move from the wide-open Web to semiclosed platforms that use the Internet for transport but not the browser for display.

  2. iOS, Android, WebOS etc etc have put us back in a multiplatform World in the short run. In the long run "apps" will probably run on the web itself. There is already a move in that direction, but it will take a year or two to develop the "app infrastructure".
