The problem with awards is that they almost totally ignore the participatory nature of the medium. Unlike TV the barriers between creator and participants are much more porous and often, if the series is done right, the participants play a significant role in the creation. Yet, when it comes to awards, people tend to take the old "mass media" approach that is predicated upon a passive audience model.
